Šmarje pri Jelšah ( German  Sankt Marein bei Erlachstein ) is a municipality in the Spodnja Štajerska region in Slovenia .

9,908 people live in the total community, which consists of 77 villages and hamlets. The main town Šmarje pri Jelšah alone has 160 inhabitants. The municipality is located in the valley of the Šmarski potok between Voglanjsko and Zgornjesotelsko . Wine is grown on the sunlit mountain slopes. The Šmarje – Virštanj wine road runs through this wine region .

The pilgrimage church of St. Roch on the Calvary near Šmarje pri Jelšah is one of the most important baroque art monuments in the country . The way to the church is lined with 14 chapels of the Way of the Cross.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the town of Lemberg pri Šmarju was an important trading center in the region, but this priority was lost with the relocation of the thoroughfare to the eastern neighboring valley.
