Lemberg pri Šmarju (German Lemberg bei St. Marein , older also Lengenburg ) is a place in the municipality Šmarje pri Jelšah (St. Marein bei Erlachstein) and is located in the historical region of Štajerska (Lower Styria) in Slovenia .

location

The place is about 5 km from Šmarje, about 23 km from Celje , about 34 km from Maribor and is traversed by the Lemberger brook (Lemberžica). The today insignificant village settlement (237 m) lies in the middle of a hilly landscape on the southern foothills of the Gabrnik (Gaberniggberg , 481 m). About the Pečica saddle (371 m), the road runs north to the valley of the Dravinja (drann) . The whole area is shaped by the mountain peak of Boč (Wotsch) (979 m), which can be seen from afar .

history

In 1251 Lemberg was first mentioned in a document as Lengenburg . In the High Middle Ages , the place was granted market rights and was a regional trading center until the beginning of the 19th century, with its inns and craft shops on a heavily frequented traffic route. With the relocation of the main road to the eastern neighboring valley and the transfer of the parish to the pilgrimage site Sladka gora (Süßenberg) , 3 km away , the decline of the market town , which today only has around 140 inhabitants , slowly began .

The name Lemberger is derived from the name of the place, as the grape variety Blaufränkisch is mostly called in Germany. Because the first vines that were planted in Germany in the 1870s came from Lemberg.

Lviv Castle

The former castle "castrum Lengenburch" is said to have been built by the Free von Sanneck near today's Pankratius Church on the mountain plateau in the second half of the 12th century. The Sann nuts who called themselves also "of Lengenfeld Castle" remained the festivals as a residential and administrative center of an extensive manorial with Regional Court until 1341. This year was by Friedrich Žovnek Castle by Emperor Louis in the imperial counts charged. After the Sanneck-Cillier went out in 1456, Lemberg fell to the Styrian sovereign .

The companion of an episcopal tour group, Paolo Santonino , reports from 1487 that the castle was destroyed by the imperial decree due to the Hungarian invasion. At that time there were armed conflicts between Emperor Friedrich III. and King Matthias Corvinus .

The administration of Lviv at that time was apparently already carried out from the neighboring rule Plankenstein (Zbelovski grad). Opened in 1498 established Urbar speaks for it. The rule of Lemberg at that time comprised 91 villages / hamlets in whole or in part and had roughly the same scope as the district court or the county.

Attractions

In the middle of the village is the church of St. Nicholas . The sacred building dates from the first half of the 15th century and was renovated in 2002. The old town hall from 1769 and the preserved stone pillory column are reminiscent of times when two large annual markets were held here and market day was every Thursday.

Above the village stands the church of St. Pankratius , near the former Lengenburg Castle.
