history

The area was settled by Slovenes in the 6th century . After the loss of Slovenian independence, it came under the Frankish rule of the Holy Roman Empire . At the end of the 11th century it was under the rule of the diocese of Krško (Gurkfeld). At that time Vitanje became the administrative center of an extensive area, as the bishops of Krško had their ministerials here , from which the families of the Vitanje manor later developed.

A castle close to the main town, Alt-Weitenstein, was indirectly mentioned for the first time in 1107 (mentioning of a knight Marchward de Witenstain). This makes it one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. Opposite is Neu-Weitenstein Castle, which dates back to the 14th century. Both structures, drawn by Georg Matthäus Vischer in 1681 , have been preserved as ruins.

In 1306 Vitanje / Weitenstein was granted market rights.

In 1900 the market town of Weitenstein had 484 inhabitants. Of these, 435 were Germans and 49 Slovenes.

For centuries Vitanje was part of Lower Styria in the Duchy of Styria , which had belonged to the western part of Austria-Hungary since 1867 . Since November 1918 the area has been part of what will later become Yugoslavia , and since 1991 Slovenia .

Cultural center for space technologies

In September 2012, because the Slovenian grandparents of the Austrian-Slovenian space theorist Herman Potočnik lived here, a cultural center for European space technologies (KSEVT) was opened as an art project with the help of the EU and the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia , which deals with cultural issues in space travel should. The architecture of the building is based on the first space station that a human being had thought up at a time when conquering space was still a thought experiment.

Wood processing

Every year the Holcerija takes place in Vitanje . The craftsmanship and customs relating to woodworking are clearly presented.
