Cultural center for European space technologies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cultural Center for European Space Technologies (KSEVT, Slovenian: K ulturno S redišče E vropskih V esoljskih T ehnologij ) is an institute that deals with the culture of space travel and was based in Vitanje , Slovenia, until 2017 .

Emergence

The center opened on September 6, 2012. The decisive factor for the choice of location was the fact that it was the hometown of the mother of the Austro-Slovenian military engineer and space theorist Herman Potočnik (* 1892-1929).

The art project was built with the help of the EU and the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia, which is supposed to deal with cultural issues in space travel. The architecture of the building is modeled on Potočnik's first space station, at a time when conquering space was still a thought experiment.

The director of the space center, Miha Turšic, said in his opening speech:

"His person is not important, what counts is his book."

The “Wohnrad”, part of the three-part space station design by Potočnik

The architecture of the building was conceived by the architectural offices Bevk-Perović , Dekleva-Gregorič , OFIS and Sadar + Vuga . The design is based on the plans for a habitable habitat ring, one of the three parts of a geostationary space station that Potočnik described in his 1929 book "The Problem of Navigating Space - The Rocket Engine" .

Construction began in 2009. The plot area is 33,305 m 2 , the gross floor area 2,450 m 2 and the construction costs are estimated at € 2.8 million. The building is a concrete monolith with aluminum cladding and glass. It is free between a main road on one side and a stream with a green hinterland on the other. The exterior and interior of the building are made up of two low cylinders. The lower one is larger and rises from north to south, while the upper, smaller cylinder cuts into the larger one in the south, rising to the north. The lower cylinder is supported by the transparent surface of the glazing at the entrance. The dynamic relationship between the two creates the impression of floating and rotating and is intended to be reminiscent of the habitat station described by Potočnik. From the outside, the dynamic effect between the cylinders is reinforced by the glass rings around the building, making it seem to float.

The central hall is surrounded by the exhibition area, both are connected by a round opening. The authors wanted to interact and emphasize the local community program and the scientific program of KSEVT. At the highest point of the circular exhibition there is a transition to a smaller cylinder of the building on the first floor where study and research takes place. The special library, the “Treasures of Modernity Collection”, is located here. A multifunctional hall and an auditorium belong to the aforementioned rooms.
