The Kakwa River is a left tributary of the Smoky River in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia .

The Kakwa River has its origin in Kakwa Lake north of McBride in the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia. The surrounding area is in the Kakwa Provincial Park and Protected Area . The river flows in a north-easterly direction north past the 2295  m high Kakwa Mountain over the border to Alberta. The Kakwa River overcomes the 30 m high Kakwa Falls at ( ). It then flows through the Kakwa Wildlands Park , then flows to the east and northeast through the foreland. It is crossed by Alberta Highway 40 (Bighorn Highway) before it finally flows into the Smoky River.

The river was originally called Porcupine River ( English porcupine " Baumstachler ") and was later renamed after the synonymous Cree word Kakwa .

The Kakwa River is used by kayakers and canoeists for water sports. Anglers catch bull trout in the river .
