Origin and course
It rises in Adolphus Lake ( 1680 m ) in the north of Jasper National Park and flows for almost 500 km in a north-easterly direction until it flows into the river of the same name ( 315 m ) on the right at the village of Peace River .
Catchment area
The mean discharge at the river mouth is an average of 350 m² / s. The catchment area covers 51,300 km² and extends to the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in the area of Jasper National Park and Willmore Wilderness Park . Its main tributary is the Wapiti River .
Naming
It owes its name - often also spelled Smokey River - to the Cree who settled here and who discovered deposits of coal on its banks due to smoldering fires .
