The Wapiti River is a river in eastern British Columbia and western Alberta in Canada .
It is a main tributary of the Smoky River , located in the southern drainage basin of the Peace River .
The name Wapiti comes from the Cree language and describes the deer species Cervus canadensis , which is also named in German .
River course
The Wapiti River flows from Tuck Lake east of Wapiti Pass in Wapiti Lake Provincial Park in west-central British Columbia in the Canadian Rockies . From there it flows in a northeast direction, crosses the border to Alberta, where it passes through the area of Grande Prairie County No. 1 meanders. 30 km east of Grande Prairie it finally flows into the Smoky River .
From west to east the Wapiti River flows through alpine landscapes of the Rocky Mountains , a hilly landscape, farmland, and the Aspen Parkland in western Alberta. Wapiti Lake Provincial Park, Bear River Park , O'Brien Provincial Park, and Pipestone Creek Park are protected areas along the river.
Near its mouth, the mean discharge of the Wapiti River is 100 m³ / s.
