history
The oldest documents for this place are 1130 Roas, 1192 Rohats, 1234 de Rohatsch u. a. In 1283 the place was mentioned in a document as a market. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the place was mentioned several times as a town because it looked like a small town because of the surrounding wall, the Gornji Rogatec Castle (now in ruins) and the Strmol Castle. Rogatec never received its town charter because it never reached the required number of inhabitants. But thanks to the border location, the market town grew prosperous.
traffic
Rogatec is located on the Grobelno (Slovenia) - Zabok (Croatia) railway . There is currently no continuous passenger train service. There is a minimal cross-border train service to the Croatian border station Đurmanec (two pairs of trains Monday to Friday, one pair of trains on Saturdays; as of the 2015/16 timetable). Trains to Zabok run more frequently from there.
Attractions
Strmol Castle, first mentioned in 1436, was extensively renovated in 1995 and today shines in new splendor.
The largest open-air museum in Slovenia is right next to the castle . Here life from the 18th to the 20th century is shown realistically. In 1998 the museum complex was declared a state monument.
