Sigismund Ernst Graf von Hohenwart (born June 7, 1745 in Cilli , Lower Styria , † April 22, 1825 in Linz ) was a Catholic clergyman and bishop of Linz .

Life

He came from an old Krainer noble family, his father Georg Sigismund Graf von Hohenwart was landowner, his mother Maria Aloysia was from the family of Killau nobles of Ehrenstein. He was baptized in the name of Ferdinand Joseph Georg Sigismund. He attended grammar school in Ljubljana and began his novitiate in the Augustinian canons of Gurk in 1763 . After his profession now Sigismund Ernst, he studied since 1764 at the Catholic University of Graz theology and acquired in 1768 the academic degree of Lic. Theol. On June 24 In 1768 he was in the Cathedral of Gorizia for priests ordained. Stations of his career were novice master , consistorial councilor , cathedral custodian and in 1785 cathedral dean in the diocese of Gurk . After moving the bishop's seat to Klagenfurt in 1787, he became vicar general of Prince-Bishop Franz II. Xaver von Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheim in Klagenfurt. He also dealt with the natural sciences and in 1799 took part in the first ascent of the Grossglockner . However, he did not reach the summit. There a height was named after him: "The Hohenwarte".

On January 13, 1809, he was appointed Bishop of Linz by Emperor Franz I of Austria . Pope Pius VII was only able to confirm the election on December 19, 1814. It was consecrated on May 7, 1815 by the Archbishop of Vienna , Sigismund Anton von Hohenwart . The enthronement in Linz took place on May 15, 1815. During his reign he visited all four hundred parishes of his diocese. He was the bishop responsible for the proceedings against Pastor Martin Boos and had him locked up for a year and installed his opponent as Boos' successor in Gallneukirchen . The emergence of an evangelical congregation there was a late consequence of Boos' work and the episcopal reaction to it.

Hohenwart found his final resting place in the old cathedral in Linz. After the completion of the New Cathedral , his remains (like those of the other Bishops of Linz buried in the Old Cathedral) were moved to the new Cathedral in 1924.
