Josephus Calasanz Fließer , also Josef Fliesser (born July 28, 1896 in Perg , Upper Austria ; † June 12, 1960 in Linz ), was Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Linz from 1941 to 1955 .

Life

In 1915 he began studying theology in Linz and was ordained a priest on June 28, 1919 . Then he was chaplain in Gunskirchen , from 1921 Waizenkirchen and Peuerbach . From 1925 he studied canon law in Rome and received his doctorate on July 6, 1927 . From 1928 he was chaplain in Linz city parish, in 1929 became a lecturer in Christian art at the diocesan school and in 1932 professor of canon law in Linz. From 1933 he was also a full secretary.

On March 19, 1941 he was from Pius XII. appointed auxiliary bishop in Linz and titular bishop of Gargara . The episcopal ordination received his Johannes Maria Gföllner . Three days before his death, Bishop Gföllner appointed him vicar general on June 1st . On June 5, he was elected Chapter Vicar and was responsible for diocesan guidance. The political situation did not permit an appointment as bishop. He acted much more pragmatically towards the National Socialists than his predecessor. By setting up new, protected pastoral care posts, he was able to protect part of the clergy from being drafted into the Wehrmacht . He advised against resistance against the Nazis in order to avoid further victims among the priests and believers, and tried unsuccessfully to prevent Franz Jägerstätter from refusing to do military service. His main concern was the Catholic youth. He supported the popular liturgical movement. The suburban parish in Wels and the compositions by Joseph Kronsteiner and Hermann Kronsteiner became a model for the liturgical renewal in the then German Empire . In 1943 and 1946 he consecrated his diocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary .

After the end of the Second World War , he expanded Caritas to alleviate the war distress. On May 11, 1946 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of Linz and enthroned on October 6th.

In 1949 Franz Zauner became his coadjutor with the right of succession. On December 31, 1955, he resigned from the office of bishop for health reasons. After his death in 1960, the former Bishop Fließer was buried in the crypt of the New Cathedral in Linz.

Individual evidence

  1. ↑ In 1946 an article about Jägerstätter in the Linzer Kirchenzeitung was rejected on the instructions of Bishop Fließer with the following reason: “I consider those ideal Catholic boys and theologians and priests and fathers to be the greater heroes who ... fought in heroic duty and fell. Or are Bible Students and Adventists who 'consistently' preferred to die in the concentration camp rather than take up arms the greater heroes? "
