Life

Franz Zauner began studying philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1925 . In 1929 he was promoted to Dr. phil. and in 1932 Dr. theol. PhD .

His ordination received Franz Zauner on 25 October 1931. He was chaplain in Mondsee and from 1934 in Linz in the parish of "Holy. Family". In 1934 he became General Prefect of the Collegium Petrinum and was church administrator there from 1938 to 1945. The Kollegium Petrinum was expropriated by the National Socialists , but managed to prevent a sale. By renting out the seminary , the diocese could continue to use the house.

From 1942 he was a lecturer in canon law and from 1946 Professor of Canon Law at the Catholic Diocesan College in Linz. In 1946 he became a Regens of the Linz seminary.

In 1949 he was appointed coadjutor of the seriously ill Bishop Josephus Calasanz Fließer and appointed titular bishop of Fata . He was ordained bishop on August 15, 1949 by Cardinal Theodor Innitzer . After the health-related resignation of Bishop Fliessers in 1955, he was on January 1, 1956 by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of Linz.

He expanded the Catholic Action , promoted Catholic education, sold parish property and had new churches built with the proceeds. With great enthusiasm he carried out the decisions of the Second Vatican Council in his diocese . He himself was elected to the council's liturgy commission with the greatest number of votes ever reached by a council father.

In 1969 his preferred candidate Alois Wagner was appointed auxiliary bishop , whom he appointed vicar general in 1973 . After reaching the age limit, he was Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Linz from August 12, 1980 to January 16, 1982 .

After his death at the age of 91, the former Bishop Zauner was buried in the crypt of the New Cathedral in Linz.
