Ernest Johann Nepomuk von Herberstein (born April 20, 1731 in Vienna , † March 17, 1788 in Linz ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman and the first bishop of Linz .

Life

Ernest Johann Nepomuk was born the son of the civil servant Ferdinand Leopold Herberstein from the East Styrian noble family Herberstein and his wife Maria Anne von Ulm-Erbach. As early as 1746 he became a canon of Freising . He studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and Catholic theology in Rome . 1752 was the doctor for his doctorate . He was ordained a priest on March 3, 1754 .

In 1755 he received a canonical in Passau . On March 8, 1767, he was ordained auxiliary bishop of Freising , his titular bishopric was Eucarpia . Maria Theresa proposed him in 1776 as Vicar General of the Diocese of Passau for Lower Austria . He took office on September 12th. He did this very conscientiously and initially met the church policy regulations of Joseph II exactly.

After the death of Passau Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian on March 13, 1783, Emperor Joseph II began to reorganize the dioceses in Austria. For Upper Austria , which previously belonged to the diocese of Passau, he created the new diocese of Linz and appointed Herberstein as diocesan bishop on March 15. On July 4, 1784, the new Bishop of Passau, Joseph Franz Anton von Auersperg, renounced the diocesan territory in Austria. On January 28, 1785, Pope Pius VI. officially the new diocese and on May 1st Herberstein was introduced to his office as bishop.

In the following years he often came into conflict with Joseph II's church policy. To introduce the Josephinian order of worship, he held a diocesan synod from November 27 to 28, 1787.

After his death he was buried in the old cathedral of Linz. After the completion of the New Cathedral , his remains (like those of the other Bishops of Linz buried in the Old Cathedral) were moved to the new Cathedral in 1924.
