Engelbert Siebler
Engelbert Alois Georg Siebler (born May 29, 1937 in Upper Bavaria ; † October 11, 2018 in Munich ) was auxiliary bishop in Munich and Freising .
Life
priest
After graduating from the Dom-Gymnasium Freising Siebler studied from 1957 Catholic theology and German at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . On June 29, 1963 Siebler was ordained a priest by Auxiliary Bishop Johannes Neuhäusler in Freising . After three years of pastoral care, he worked from 1966 to 1971 at the Archbishop's Study Seminar St. Michael in Traunstein as Prefect . From 1971 to 1976 Siebler was a religion teacher at high schools in Traunstein , Traunreut and Bad Reichenhall and from 1976 to 1985 director of the study seminar in Traunstein. In 1985, Friedrich Cardinal Wetter appointed him to the Ordinariate Council and head of School Section I of the Archbishop's Ordinariate in Munich.
Auxiliary bishop
Pope John Paul II appointed Siebler on March 1, 1986 titular bishop of Tela and auxiliary bishop in Munich and Freising. The episcopal ordination took place on April 20 of the same year by Friedrich Cardinal Wetter. Co-consecrators were his predecessor, Auxiliary Bishop Ernst Tewes and Auxiliary Bishop Matthias Paul Defregger from the Munich-South region. Siebler then became episcopal vicar for the pastoral care region of Munich, one of the three pastoral care regions of the archdiocese. He succeeded Ernst Tewes in this task . In 1999 he became dean of the Munich Metropolitan Chapter his authority. In the Archbishop's Ordinariate, Siebler was head of the Foreign Language Pastoral Department from 1996 to 2002.
On July 31, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. The office of auxiliary bishop was not filled again for the time being. Rupert Graf zu Stolberg-Stolberg initially took over as Episcopal Vicar on January 1, 2013 (and from December 10, 2016 as Auxiliary Bishop) for the Munich region.
Allegations of abuse and ill-treatment
In June 2020, Siebler, who died in 2018, was accused of sexually abusing and physically abusing students as head of the Traunstein boarding school between 1976 and 1985 . The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising announced a "comprehensive review in the interests of those affected".
