Franz Ignaz Albert von Werdenstein , also Werthenstein (born October 3, 1697 in Dellmensingen , today a district of Erbach (Danube) , † September 20, 1766 ) was a Catholic clergyman, canon as well as vicar general and auxiliary bishop in Freising .

origin

He came from the Allgäu noble family of the Lords von Werdenstein , who already resided in Dellmensingen at that time. His parents were Johann Christoph von Werdenstein (1667–1735), prince-bishop Eichstättischer nurse to Dollnstein and Mörnsheim , as well as his wife Maria Theresia Constantia nee. von Eyb (1676-1736). The qualitative coat of arms epitaph of the parents is in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, Dollnstein. The mother was a niece of the Eichstätt Prince-Bishop Johann Martin von Eyb (1630-1704) and the sister-in-law of General Heinrich Karl von Bibra (1666-1734).

Life

Franz Ignaz Albert von Werdenstein attended the Jesuit College in Eichstätt for six years and studied at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome from 1720 . Still as a deacon, he received a canon donation in Freising on May 22, 1720, from 1720 to 1721 he was also domicellar in Bamberg , later provost of the collegiate monastery of St. Zeno in Isen . He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1720.

On September 20, 1756, Werdenstein was appointed titular bishop of Taenarum by the Pope , consecrated bishop on November 21, 1756 by Cardinal Johann Theodor von Bayern and took over the office of auxiliary bishop in Freising. He had been vicar general there since at least 1746. On February 3, 1759, the clergyman advanced to electoral Bavarian privy council . He also officiated as a real spiritual privy councilor of the dioceses of Freising, Regensburg and Augsburg . In 1760, Auxiliary Bishop Werdenstein became titular provost of Saint Peter am Madron .

Franz Ignaz Albert von Werdenstein was an avid bishop who performed many ordinations. In addition, he also emerged as a spiritual writer, u. a. In 1738 he published a biography of Johannes Angelus Porro, who was beatified the previous year . His younger cousin, Prince-Bishop of Fulda Heinrich von Bibra (1711–1788), he himself ordained bishop in 1760. In 1762 he donated the minor ordinations to the later Regensburg prince-bishop Maximilian Prokop von Toerring-Jettenbach , and in 1763 also to the later Elector of Trier, Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony .

After his death in 1766, Bishop von Werdenstein was buried in Freising Cathedral .
