Tommaso Demaria

Tommaso Demaria SDB (born November 21, 1908 in Vezza d'Alba , † July 12, 1996 in Turin ) was an Italian Salesian of Don Bosco and theologian . He was best known for his Thomistic studies.

Life

After primary school, he went to the Alba seminary to complete the first years of high school. For the following years he attended the Salesian traineeship in Penango Monferrato , Asti . On September 24, 1925, he entered the novitiate of Villa Moglia di Chieri and finished it with his first profession. After studying higher studies and philosophy at the Lyceum in Valsalice from 1926 to 1928 and completing his three-year Salesian internship, he went to study theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1931 to 1935 . He was ordained a priest on October 28, 1934 . From 1935 to 1940 he deepened his theological training at the Institute for Mission Studies of the Pontifical Urban University . Between 1940 and 1979 he taught at the theological faculty of the Pontifical Atheneum of the Salesians in Turin and Rome, which in 1973 became the Pontifical University of the Salesians with its seat in Rome.

His main research interests were broad and ranged from the history of religion , missiology, philosophy and sociology of education , fundamental theology , Catholic social doctrine to dogmatics .

His work was shaped by his friend Paolo Arnaboldi SDB, who founded the Church Movement Fac (Fraterno aiuto cristiano) in 1948 , the “Christian Aid”.

The work of the Italian philosophical society Associazione Nuova Costruttività (“Association for New Constructivity”) is based on his work .
