1879 by St. Founded by Johannes Bosco himself, it was the first Institute for Higher Studies of the Salesians. It also houses the “San Giovanni Bosco” natural science museum, which is interesting for the exhibits from the Salesian missions. The Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome later emerged from the Institute for Missions Abroad .

The remains of Don Bosco were kept in Valsalice for a few years until they were transferred to the Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Turin .

The pupils and students included: Andrea Beltrami , August Czartoryski , Marco Travaglio , Vincenzo Cimatti , Leonardo Chiariglione and, more recently, Tarcisio Bertone . The German Salesian Johannes Perk was ordained a priest there.

In the summer of 2007, the school hit the headlines across Italy because the institute's former economist - along with other Turin priests - was accused of molesting an underage youth in the late 1990s.
