August Czartoryski SDB , full name August Franciszek Maria Anna Józef Kajetan (born August 2, 1858 in Paris , † April 8, 1893 in Alassio ), was a Polish nobleman , Roman Catholic priest and Salesian of Don Bosco .

Life

The son of Prince Ladislaus Czartoryski and his wife Maria Amparo was born in exile in Paris and was an orphan at the age of six because his mother died of tuberculosis . He himself suffered from tuberculosis in his early youth, which weakened him all his life. His stepmother became Marguerite d'Orléans , the granddaughter of the French king. Raised multilingual (Polish, French, Spanish), he saw Poland as his fatherland. He spent his youth partly in Poland and at the Spanish royal court of Alfonso XII. In 1867 he lived again in Sieniawa in Poland for a few months . From 1868 onwards, he again completed part of his school days in Paris, but due to his physical constitution he only received lessons at home. He celebrated his first communion again in Sieniawa in 1871, then lived and studied in Krasiczyn and later in Krakow . There he also received private tuition, with his tutor from 1874 to 1877, Józef Kalinowski (religious name Raphael of St. Joseph), who later joined the Discalced Carmelites and who was canonized , exerted a great influence on him. At an early age he decided against the will of his family to dedicate his life to God. He met Don Bosco in 1883 during his visit to Paris at the Lambert Palace . Shaped by years of mystical experiences, he confessed to Don Bosco in Turin shortly before Easter 1887 and then wanted to join the Salesians and become a priest. Don Boscos initially refused and advised him against becoming a priest. After Czartoryski, however, with Pope Leo XIII. Had spoken and the latter recognized his mystical experiences, Don Bosco was also prepared to accept the young noblewoman among the Salesians. The dressing took place on November 24, 1887 in the Maria-Hilf-Basilica in Turin by Don Boscos himself. Due to his illness, he had many interruptions in his studies, which is why he had to continue his studies independently, cared for by his brother Andreas Beltrami . In April 1892 he was ordained priest in a private chapel in Sanremo by the Bishop of Ventimiglia and lived in Alassio until his death the following year. August Czartoryski found his grave in the church in Sieniawa. The relics are now in Przemyśl .
