Life

The son of a district road warden who died in World War I in 1914 was raised by the widow and his brother Martin Söll (SDB; 1911–1981) alone. From 1926 Söll attended the study seminar St. Josef the Salesians Don Bosco in Burghausen and the high school there. In 1933 he switched to the humanistic grammar school in Ingolstadt . After graduating from high school, Söll became a novice of the Salesians Don Bosco in Ensdorf / Upper Palatinate in August 1935 . On August 15, 1936, he made his first religious professorship and then completed a three-year pedagogical internship in the apprenticeship and youth home in the Burkardushof in Würzburg (acquired by the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1920) . At the same time he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Würzburg . He then switched to the religious college of the Salesians Don Bosco in Benediktbeuern , before he was called up for military service in the intelligence service in the spring of 1940 (two years in France, three years in Russia). During a study leave he was ordained a priest in Würzburg in 1941 by Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried . After returning home from the war, Söll received his doctorate by December 1948 at the University of Tübingen as the last student of the dogmatist Karl Adam with the subject The Mariology of the Cappadocians . He then returned to Benediktbeuern as a lecturer.

He soon became a professor for theological encyclopedia and spirituality, and later for dogmatics . From 1950 to 1954 he was also director of studies, from 1954 to 1960 and 1963 to 1969 director of the Benediktbeuern branch. From 1960 to 1963 he was an associate professor at the newly established chair for the history of dogma at the international Pontificio Ateneo Salesiano in Turin and remained so in addition to his work in Benediktbeuern when the Turin University was relocated to Rome ( Universitas Pontificia Salesiana , UPS for short) in 1965 .

From 1967 to 1977 he was rector of the Philosophical-Theological University (PTH) Benediktbeuern . In this function he achieved the affiliation of the theological department of the PTH to the theological faculty of the UPS, then in 1976 that of the philosophy department to the philosophy faculty. In 1971 Benediktbeuern was opened to non-Salesians. From 1974 to 1980 he was appointed full professor for the history of dogma in Rome. In 1982 he retired in Benediktbeuern, but continued reading until 1989 and also remained active as a visiting professor in Rome. During that time he was doing a PhD for eight confreres.

Söll was a member of the Accademia Mariana Salesiana , the Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis , the German Working Group for Mariology , the Görres Society for the Care of Science, the Church and Sport Working Group ; finally of the Pastoral Council of the Diocese of Augsburg and from 1974 to 1978 of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Sports Association .
