history

At the end of the Manufahi rebellion , more than 12,000 rebellious Timorese men, women and children were encircled by the Portuguese colonial troops in an area of 35 km² on Mount Leolaco ( 333  m ), northwest of today's Dai-Sua . During the attempt to break out between August 8 and 10, 1912, the rebel leader Boaventura escaped with thousands of his supporters. More than 3,000 fighters and civilians who stayed behind are said to have been slaughtered by the Portuguese over the next two days and nights. It was one of the largest massacres in Portuguese colonial history .

During the Indonesian occupation of East Timor (1975 to 1999), residents of the Sucos Mountains were driven from their homeland and settled in Dai-Sua and in neighboring Sucos, where they had family ties. The aim was to better separate them from the FALINTIL resistance fighters and control them.
