Heribert Esser

Heribert Esser (born January 12, 1929 in Rheinhausen ) is a German conductor and university professor. Appointed General Music Director in Braunschweig in 1962 , from 1987 to 1994 he held the Elder Chair of Music at the Elder Conservatory of the University of Adelaide . Most recently he directed the Philharmonic State Orchestra Halle .

Life

Heribert Esser was born in 1929 as the son of the civil servant Edmund Esser and his wife Gertrud, b. Krahforst, born in Rheinhausen (today: Duisburg ). After graduating from high school in 1947 at the municipal mathematical and natural science high school in Rheinhausen , he studied until 1952 at the Cologne University of Music as well as German and musicology at the University of Cologne . His conducting teacher was Günter Wand . He also attended a master class with Karl Hermann Pillney and the chamber music seminars of Maurits Frank . He received his first engagement in 1953 at the stages in Freiburg im Breisgau. From 1954 he was a repetitor with a conductor engagement in Cologne. In 1958 he became the first Kapellmeister and assistant to Wolfgang Sawallisch at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden . In 1958 he got the first Kapellmeister there. In 1961 he moved to the Städtische Bühnen Köln with Sawallisch.

In 1962 he succeeded Arthur Grüber at the Braunschweig State Theater . At the age of 33, he was one of the youngest general music directors in Germany. He held this office for 25 years. He was also artistic director of the Days of New Chamber Music in Braunschweig from 1984 to 1986. He was also active as a guest conductor in a variety of ways. In 1965 he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1969 he conducted the Wiener Symphoniker for a recording of Paganini's violin concertos No. 1 and 2 (soloist: Shmuel Ashkenasi ). From 1975 to 1985 he was a permanent guest conductor with the Stadtorchester Winterthur .

From 1987 to 1994 he was David Galliver's successor as a music professor ( Elder Chair of Music ) at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide in South Australia , where he was director from 1988 to 1992. In 2000 he was editor of the work The Art of Performance by Heinrich Schenker .

In 2004 he succeeded Wolf-Dieter Hauschild as chief conductor of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Halle , which is about to merge . After being a guest conductor in 2005/06, the orchestra was transferred to the Staatskapelle Halle .

Esser, Catholic, has been with Rosemarie, born in 1958. Clormann, married.
