John Weigand (* 8. November 1966 in Heidelberg ) is a German opera director and - intendant . Since 2009 he has been the opera director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen , and since the beginning of the 2015/16 season he has been general director of the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau .

In 1977 he spoke the role of Rolf in the radio play Geschichte der Urzeit . Weigand studied musical theater directing at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama and then worked as an assistant director and evening director at the Frankfurt Opera and Bonn Opera . As a freelance director, he staged, among others, L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi at the Feldkirchfestspiele 2002 and the Magic Flute by Mozart at the Gandersheim Cathedral Festival in 2004. Until 2007 he was a lecturer for drama lessons at the Cologne University of Music , Europe's largest music academy .

From 2001 to 2009 Weigand was senior director of the opera division at the Wuppertal theaters . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he replaced the previous general manager Gerd Leo Kuck as opera director together with Christian von Treskow , who heads the acting department .

In the Wuppertal season 2007/2008 he staged The Frog Prince by Ulrich Hub , The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart and Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten . In 2009 he staged the opera La porta della legge - quasi un monologo circulare (The Gate to the Law - a circular monologue, as it were) by Salvatore Sciarrino , which premiered on April 25, 2009 in the Wuppertal Opera House .

Toshiyuki Kamioka was Weigand's successor as the opera director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen from the end of the contract in 2014 . Weigand himself had been the designated general director of the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau since 2014 . The city council of Dessau-Roßlau appointed him unanimously. The directorship began on August 1, 2015 with the start of the 2015/16 season. At the beginning of 2016 he staged the Verdi opera Stiffelio in the Venetian opera house La Fenice .
