action
After the death of her father, Epifania Parerga becomes the richest woman in the world as the heir to his company. His last will , however, makes Epifania's marriage a condition that the groom must increase the sum of £ 500 to £ 15,000 within three months. She marries the tennis player Alastair with a trick by first lending him 500 pounds for shares and then buying them back for 15,000; however, the marriage soon breaks down because of Alastair's affair with Polly Smith. Epifania then tries to drown herself in the Thames , but the good-natured doctor Dr. Ahmed El Kabir saved. She now makes the decision to marry the doctor, but he only worries about his patients, whom he treats in a poorly equipped and run-down practice. After several failed attempts to win the doctorate, this Epifania reveals his mother's last will: the future wife has to get by on only 35 schillings for three months . If both are now able to fulfill the last will of their respective testator, they want to get married.
The millionaire is employed in an Italian pasta factory and after three months she actually turns her into a successful business (in the end she even buys her). Dr. Kabir, however, is eager to get rid of the £ 500 and he manages to do so by giving it away, whereupon Epifania desperately threatens to fire the entire board of her company and move to a Tibetan monastery. Your director Juliues Sagamore tries to save his post by hitting Dr. Kabir convinced of a marriage and for 15,000 pounds some papers with miracle drugs from Dr. Buying up Kabir's practice. In the end, they both express their love for each other and kiss.
reception
“Die Millionärin” received rather mixed reviews and achieved a 51% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes ; his imdb rating is 5.3 out of 10. In 1961 he was nominated for Best Screenplay at the British BAFTA Award .
Bosley Crowther of the New York Times criticized that the joke of Bernard Shaw's book contrasts with the one-dimensional play of Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers.
“The efforts of a fabulously wealthy heiress to find an idealistic doctor for the poor, staged as an item of clothing and fashion show for the leading actress, based on Shaw's satirical comedy. Since the cheeky dialogues of the original were largely retained and Peter Sellers dominated his role, a kind of multi-millionaire revue of some charm emerged. "
