Giuseppe Amato
Giuseppe Amato , (called Peppino , actually Giuseppe Vasaturo ; born August 24, 1899 in Naples , † February 3, 1964 in Rome ) was an Italian film producer and director .
Life
Amato had built a reputation for himself in the Neapolitan theater scene by the 1920s when he turned to film production in the early 1930s. After several stays in the USA, a large number of often remarkable films were made under his direction, among the most famous of which are bicycle thieves and La Dolce Vita . Again and again he directed himself, so that between 1938 and 1961 he made eight films himself.
Amato was a supporter of Vittorio de Sica and Roberto Rossellini and thus also a pioneer of neorealism in Italian cinema. Again and again he showed a feeling for trend-setting films, for which he was not afraid of financial risk. Under his aegis, films such as Quattro passe fra le nuvole (1942) or La cena delle beffe were made in the same year, Rome, open city (1945), Umberto D. (1952) and Pietro Germis Unter smooth skin (1959).
Amato's daughter Maria was married to Bud Spencer until his death in 2016 .
In 1964 Amato died of a heart attack. He was portrayed in the film Celluloide (1996) by Massimo Dapporto .
