history

Until the church is planted

Settlement areas 50 AD

Numerous finds from the Celtic period prove the early settlement. At the turn of the times, Elbe Germans invaded the area. A Germanic burial ground in the area of the Neubert Baggersee was used for around 450 years. Around the year 50 the place was in the middle of the settlement area of the Narisker tribe .

While Altendorf was first mentioned as a Slavic round village in 1096, the Seussling district was mentioned as a church village as early as 800. One of the 14 Slavic churches from the time of Charlemagne's Slav mission stood here . The Seusslings parish reached far into the Steigerwald .

Altendorf belonged before the secularization of the Bishopric of Bamberg , and from 1500 also to the Frankish Empire circle . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

19th and 20th centuries

Since 1840 the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal has led directly past Altendorf. In the 1960s it was built over there with the Main-Danube Canal .

religion

The Catholic Church in Altendorf is a branch church of Saint Bartholomew, Buttenheim . There is also the Catholic parish of Sankt-Sigismund Seussling in the municipality.

The parish church of St. Sigismund received its patronage when Emperor Charles IV had the remains of the saint transferred from Saint Maurice in the Swiss canton of Valais to Prague in 1354 . The shrine was also set down in Seussling. One arm of the dead king remained as a relic in the parish church.

According to the census on May 9, 2011, 75.7% of the population are Roman Catholic and 11.5% Evangelical Lutheran. 12.8% have another religion or are non-denominational.

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Seussling was incorporated.

In 1978 the Buttenheim administrative community , consisting of Buttenheim and Altendorf, was founded. This body was dissolved on January 1st, 2002, and since then both municipalities have had their own administration.
