The Jewish community in Maßbach , a community in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen ( Bavaria ), came into being after the Thirty Years' War and was destroyed in 1942 by the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era .

history

The landlords , the Counts of Hatzfeld and then the Lords of Rosenbach , had Jews settle in the village after the Thirty Years' War . They lived in buildings that were specially built for them by the manor. Around 1725 a synagogue and a rabbi house with a ritual bath ( mikveh ) were built. The cemetery was established in 1902, before the dead were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Kleinbardorf .

A Jewish school in Maßbach is documented for the first time in 1710 and existed until the end of the 19th century. As a result of emigration and emigration, the number of parishioners decreased from the middle of the 19th century.

synagogue

The synagogue, which was built around 1725, burned down in 1747 and was rebuilt in the same place despite the protest of the Protestant pastor. In 1899 a new synagogue was inaugurated.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA people destroyed the interior of the synagogue and the ritual objects . The synagogue building was retained and converted into a residential and commercial building.

National Socialist Persecution

In 1933 there were still 34 Jews living in Maßbach. The increasing reprisals and the consequences of the economic boycott left the Jewish community members impoverished. In 1942 the last eight Jewish residents were deported to the Izbica ghetto and the Theresienstadt concentration camp .

The memorial book of the Federal Archives lists 27 Jewish citizens born in Maßbach who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
