City Theater Lindau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lindau City Theater is Lindau's municipal theater in Lake Constance . Opened in 1951, the house offers plays, opera and ballet productions from various stages in German-speaking countries, an international concert series with chamber concerts as well as cabaret and cabaret. The Lindau Marionette Opera is also located in the Lindau City Theater. The house has around 700 seats (parquet and two tiers) and an orchestra pit.

Architectural history of the theater

The Lindau City Theater is housed in a former monastery church. In the 13th century, barefoot monks came to Lindau and founded one of the first Franciscan monasteries north of the Alps. In 1241 the monastery was confirmed by Bishop Heinrich von Konstanz. At the end of the 13th century the western nave was enlarged and in 1380 the late Gothic choir was completed. The church received valuable fresco decorations, the fresco of the Last Judgment from 1516 by Mathis Miller has survived to this day on the south wall of today's stage. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1528 and the building became the property of the city. The church interior was partly used as a salt barn. In 1658 the Barfüßerkirche became the Evangelical Trinity Church. In 1747/49 the choir was separated from the nave. A ceiling was put in the choir. The Imperial City Library was housed on the ground floor. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche was closed in 1798 and the church interior served from then on as barracks, military and fire department stores and as a gym. From 1868 the building was used for cultural purposes. The concert hall was built in the upper choir, and in 1886/87 a theater hall was built in the Barfüßerkirche by the architect Wimmer, which was opened on May 22, 1887.

The conversion to the city theater in 1950/51

In 1950 and 1951 the theater was rebuilt by the architect Robert Braun. The large auditorium with 800 seats was redesigned in the style of the 1950s. The large oval ceiling was designed by the sculptor Mezger with a relief: the muse Thalia riding on Pegasus. The new stage was built on the south wall of the former Barefoot Church. In the stage building, the first and second tier two foyers were completed in 1953, which also serve as the break foyers today and whose furnishings have been fully preserved from the 1950s. While the exterior facade, the entrance area and the concert hall set up in the former choir (today the seat of the Lindau Marionette Opera) still reveal the former church, the theater and foyers - consistently designed in the style of the 1950s - are the first listed theater in Germany after the Second World War. On May 19, 1951, the city theater was officially opened with Mozart's wedding of Figaro in a performance by the Bavarian State Opera.

Since the 2011/12 season to the present day, the theater has reported an increase in subscribers of 60 percent.
