The market was named after the Dutch historian Olfert Dappert (1636–1689), who published a five-part description of Amsterdam in the 17th century ("Historical Description of the City of Amsterdam"). In 1910 the "Dapperstraat" ( Dapperstrasse ) was officially designated as a shopping street ("ventstraat") by the municipality of Amsterdam at the same time as the Albert Cuyp -Straat, the Ten Katestraat (with today's Ten Katemarkt) and the Lindengracht. The first apartments in the "Dapperbuurt" ( Dapperviertel ) were built at the beginning of the 20th century for civil servants, the self-employed and workers with higher incomes.
The Dappermarkt with an international range of goods is around 600 meters long, with around 250 stalls and a multicultural character, open from Monday to Saturday. In 2006 and 2007 the store was named “Best Market in the Netherlands”.
In the November / December 2007 edition of the International Travel Guide National Geographic , Dappermarkt was ranked eighth in the “Top 10” international shopping streets. Around the Dappermarkt there are more than 120 different shops that make up the "Dapperviertel shopping center" ( koopcentrum Dapperbuurt ).
