Albert Cuypmarkt

The Albert Cuypmarkt is the largest daily market in Amsterdam and the most famous in the Netherlands . The market takes its name from the Dutch landscape painter Albert Cuyp .

The market, de Cuyp , as it is popularly known, on Albert Cuypstraat in Amsterdam's De Pijp district , opened in 1904 as a Saturday market with handcarts and street vendors. It has been held six days a week (Monday to Saturday) since 1912 until today (as of 2012). At the beginning of the 20th century, de Pijp was a working-class district with around 15,000 inhabitants and “ poverty, prostitution and alcoholism were everyday life ”.

history

The name De Pijp is said to have originated in 1892 when there was still a city moat and this was compared to a Pijpenla (tube-like moat). Another explanation ascribes the name to the fact that the district was the first to be connected to gas pipelines ( Pijpen ) outside the city center by the Gaspijpencompanie . The Albert Cuypmarkt was built in an area where sawmills used to stand; the moat was drained and the sawmills dismantled. Around 1900 the population of the district "YY", later called De Pijp , consisted of craftsmen, middle-class officials, students, artists and small businesses.

In the Albert Cuypstraat more and more traders could be found who drew a large audience and were chased away by the police because of traffic obstruction. The existing situation was then officially legalized by the municipality in 1905. In 1930 around 75,000 people lived in De Pijp ; during the Second World War the number of the population had halved.

In the 1960s and 1970s the Neighborhood Market became the largest retail market in the Netherlands. Today in the summer months almost 20,000 people visit the market every day with its 300 stalls and 1 km in length and its international range of food including poultry, fish, baked goods, fruit, vegetables, flowers, clothing, electrical items, jewelry and much more. It is considered the largest weekly market in Europe. In 2005 the market celebrated its 100th anniversary. In addition to the stalls, there are numerous cafes, small and large restaurants with international cuisine, specialty shops with, for example, herbs, tea, goods shops with clothing, household items and other items. Was De Pijp and the Albert Cuypstraat once a typical working-class neighborhood, today is similar to the Dappermarkt in Amsterdam-Oost , multicultural become and is known as the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam with an international atmosphere of art, shops, restaurants, cultural facilities and about 40 nationalities.
