Lea Sophie Friedrich (born January 7, 2000 in Dassow ) is a German track cyclist who specializes in short-term disciplines.
Athletic career
Lea Sophie Friedrich initially played football for six years until an acquaintance recognized her special sporting talent and invited her to take part in cycling training.
From 2011 Friedrich drove bike races on the track. After winning national titles in their respective age groups, she started at the German track championships in Berlin in 2015 and won two titles in the youth class, as well as the championships in Cottbus the following year . From 2013 she attended the sports high school in Schwerin .
In 2017 Lea Friedrich started at the Junior World Track Championships and won silver with Emma Götz in the team sprint and in the 500-meter time trial as well as bronze in the sprint . This made her the most successful German participant in this World Cup. At the Junior European Championships in the same year she won silver in sprint, time trial and team sprint (with Emma Götz). She also became a three-time German junior champion. At the 2018 German track championships , she again won three junior titles. In addition, she became German champion in the team sprint of the elite together with Miriam Welte .
The UCI Juniors Track World Championships 2018 Lea Friedrich was the most successful athlete as they all four titles in the short-term disciplines sprint, 500-meter time trial, keirin and team sprint (with Emma Götz and Alessa Pröpster won). At her first start at the Elite World Championships, at the 2019 title fights in Pruszków , Poland , she finished fourth in the sprint. In 2019 she won two titles at the U23 European Championships (500 meter time trial and Keirin) and silver in the sprint.
Awards
In February 2018 Lea Friedrich was honored as Sportswoman of the Year 2017 by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , two years later she received this award again. In December 2018 she was named German young cyclist of the year. In 2019, together with Alessa-Catriona Pröpster and Emma Götz, she was awarded the title of “Junior Sportswoman” in the team division.
