Darja Michailowna Schmeljowa ( Russian Дарья Михайловна Шмелёва , English transcription Darya Shmelyova / Shmeleva ; born October 26, 1994 in Moscow ) is a Russian track cyclist . Along with Anastassija Voinowa, she is one of the dominant female cyclists in her country in the 2010s.

Athletic career

In 2011 Darja Schmeljowa became Junior World Champion in the team sprint in Moscow , together with Anastassija Woinowa . At the UCI World Junior Championships 2012 in Invercargill Schmeljowa won four titles: in the time trial, in the keirin , in the sprint . In the team sprint, she also won the gold medal with Lidija Pluschnikowa; In addition, the two athletes set two new junior world records over 34.321 seconds and over 34.155 seconds. On the same day, she improved the world best time over 500 meters to 34.753 seconds. In the same year Darja Schmeljowa was Junior European Champion in Keirin and Sprint. At the European Elite Championships in Panevėžys , Lithuania, in 2012 , she finished second in the team sprint with Anastassija Woinowa and second in the time trial in 2014 .

In the following year Schmeljowa was together with Woinowa European champion of the elite in the team sprint and won bronze in the time trial. In 2016 Schmeljowa and Woinowa became world champions in the team sprint in London . In the same year Schmeljowa was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . Together with Woinowa, she won the silver medal in the team sprint. She finished 22nd in the sprint and 13th in the Keirin. In the following year, the two athletes were able to win the world championship title in the team sprint again, while Schmeljowa also won the 500-meter time trial.

In 2018, the 23-year-old won the silver medal in the time trial at the World Championships in Apeldoorn , and in the team sprint she won bronze with Woinowa. 2019 was an extremely successful year for her: world champion in time trial, vice world champion in team sprint, world championship bronze in keirin, two gold medals at the European games in Minsk and other successes. She also won two World Cup races with Ekaterina Rogowaja . During the World Cup run in Cambridge , she had a bad fall that left her with six broken ribs and a bruised lung.
