Campbell Stewart (born May 12, 1998 in Palmerston North ) is a New Zealand cyclist who primarily competes in races on the track .

Athletic career

Campbell Stewart attended Boys' High School in his hometown and began cycling in the "cycling factory" there, which Simon van Velthooven and Jesse Sergent had created, under the aegis of supervisor Mike McRedmond, who himself had been successful as a track cyclist. Stewart's older sister Kate was also active as a cyclist.

In 2014 Stewart was New Zealand junior champion in the omnium on the track, the following year in road racing. In 2015 and 2016 he was four times junior world champion in various track disciplines. At the Junior World Championships 2016, the New Zealand junior four-man set a new world record with Stewart, Jared Gray , Thomas Sexton and Connor Brown (4: 1.409 minutes).

From 2017 Stewart started in the elite. Together with Sexton he was Oceania champion in two-man team driving . At the 2017/18 Track Cycling World Cup in Santiago de Chile , he won in the two-man team and in the team pursuit. At the Oceania Championships he won silver in points and team driving and at the Commonwealth Games in scratch and points. At the UCI Track World Championships 2018 in Apeldoorn , Campbell Stewart finished fifth in the Omnium.

In 2019 Campbell Stewart won six races in the Omnium and two-man team races in the Track Cycling World Cup, and at the 2019/20 Oceania Championships he won silver with Thomas Sexton in two-man team driving . At the UCI Track World Championships 2020 in Berlin , he finished second with Corbin Strong , Aaron Gate , Jordan Kerby and Regan Gough in the team pursuit and second in the two-man team driving with Aaron Gate.

Honors

In 2017 Campbell Stewart was awarded the New Zealand Halberg Award for “up and coming youngsters” after he had finished second in this athlete's election the year before, behind the pole vaulter Eliza McCartney .
