Nicholas Paul (born September 12, 1998 in Gasparillo ) is a track cyclist from Trinidad and Tobago who specializes in short-term disciplines.

Athletic career

In 2015, Nicholas Paul became Junior Champion of Trinidad and Tobago in the 1000 meter time trial . In the following year he won gold in the sprint at the Junior Pan American Championships and silver in the keirin and with Jabari Whiteman and Chaquille Henry in the team sprint . He then spent a few months in the World Cycling Center of the World Cycling Association UCI in Aigle, Switzerland . In 2017 he won the national sprint title in the elite and with Njisane Phillip and Kwesi Browne the silver medal in the team sprint at the Pan American Championships.

In 2018 Paul won three gold medals at the Central America and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Barranquilla, Colombia : in the sprint, in the time trial and with Phillip and Browne in the team sprint. The national team was looked after by the Canadian Erin Hartwell ; Paul's exercise bike is Anthony Sellier . Over 1000 meters, Paul set a new CAC and a new national record with 1: 00.171 minutes. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia he finished sixth in the team sprint together with Keron Bramble , Phillip and Browne . In the same constellation, the four riders from Trinidad and Tobago became Pan American champions in front of a home crowd at the National Cycling Center in Couva in 2018 and set a new America record with 42.681 seconds.

Nicholas Paul won gold twice at the 2019 Pan American Games : in the sprint and with Njisane Phillip , Kwesi Browne and Keron Bramble in the team sprint. In the 200-meter qualification in the sprint, he set a new Pan-American record with 9.808 seconds. A few weeks later, the team with Paul undercut their own record from the previous year with 41.938 seconds at the Pan American championships. Paul himself set a new world record in qualifying for the sprint competition with 9.100 seconds and became the Pan American champion in this discipline.

In December 2019, the team from Trinidad and Tobago was deprived of the gold medal and Njisane Phillip the silver medal of the 2019 Pan American Games because Philipp had tested positive for doping . Because of this decision, the chances fell for the team, the Olympic Games in Tokyo to qualify. Thereupon Browne and Phillip denied no further competitions, and the Canadian national coach Erin Hartwell left the association and moved to China .

Nicholas Paul and his teammate Kwesi Browne qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in individual competitions. They prepared for their start in Tokyo at the World Cycling Center in Aigle, Switzerland with coach Craig MacLean .

Honors

In 2016 Nicholas Paul was honored as Junior Sportsman of the Year in Trinidad and Tobago, and in 2019 as “Sportsman of the Year” in his country.
