Shannon McCurley (born April 26, 1992 in Traralgon , Australia ) is an Irish - Australian track cyclist .
Shannon McCurley competed in athletics in her youth , but switched to cycling after an injury. Dissatisfied with the support from the Australian Cycling Federation, she decided in 2010 to start for Ireland, the country of birth of her parents. At first she focused on scratch racing on the track. However, since Scratch is no longer an Olympic discipline, she started racing in the Keirin . With this she switched from an endurance to a short-term discipline. She trains in Melbourne , her coach is former cyclist and Australian road champion John Beasley . She only trains with the Irish national team in the summer.
For two years, McCurley toured category 1 track races in Europe, Australia and Asia to collect points for Olympic qualification. She survived several falls, was hit by a car on a training drive in 2015 and had an appendix operation .
In 2016, McCurley became the first Irish female track cyclist to qualify for the Olympic Games . In the Keirin, she finished 21st. At the UEC European Rail Championships in 2019 , she won the silver medal in scratch .
