Bieno (German outdated: Blein ) is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 431 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Trento , region of Trentino-Alto Adige . It belongs to the valley community Comunità Valsugana e Tesino .

geography

Bieno is located about 33 kilometers east of Trento on the northern edge of the Valsugana at 815  m slm between Monte Lefre ( 1305  m ) in the south and the Rava group ( 2496  m ) in the north. From Bieno the Strada provinciale 78 leads over the Passo della Forcella ( 910  m ) to the plateau of Tesino.

history

Bieno was first mentioned in 1241 as Bleni , even if the place name is possibly of pre-Roman origin. In any case, the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta Altinate passed Bieno . In the past, the inhabitants of Bieno worked as traveling traders and stonemasons and were known beyond the town. The granite was quarried and processed from the nearby Rava group.

During the First World War , after the start of the Austro-Hungarian spring offensive, the Italian line of defense ran through the town, which is why Bieno was badly damaged and almost completely rebuilt after the war.

In the course of the fascist municipal reform decided in 1927, the municipality of Bieno was dissolved in 1928 and attached to the municipality of Pieve Tesino . In 1947, Bieno was given back its municipal rights.
