Caldes ( Solander : Caudés or Cjaudes ; outdated German varieties: Kalteis , Kalds , Kaldetsch , Gildeis or Gilds ) is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 1098 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Trentino in the Trentino-South Tyrol region . The community is located about 35.5 kilometers north-west of Trento at Noce and belongs to the valley community Comunità della Valle di Sole .

The core of the still existing Castel Caldes was built between 1230 and 1235 by Rambald and Arnold von Cagnò , with the permission of the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Gerardo Oscasali. Together with the Rocca di Samoclevo, it was used to control traffic in Val di Sole . In 1464 it passed from the Lords of Caldes (whose coat of arms is red-white-red like the Austrian one) to the Lords of Thun , who held it until 1870. Between 1670 and 1675, alterations and wall decorations were carried out by Giovanni Cinquetti from Verona, who also furnished the chapel. Today it belongs to the Province of Trentino, which had it thoroughly renovated from 2010 to 2014, as a venue for cultural events.
