Sanzeno ( German no longer gebräulich Sanzinnen even Sankt senses ) is an Italian municipality with 912 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in the province of Trento (region Trentino-Alto Adige ). It is part of the valley community Comunità della Val di Non .

geography

The community is located about 32 km north-north-west of Trento on the orographic left side of the Non Valley above the Santa Giustina reservoir .

history

Archaeological finds prove that the place was already inhabited at the time of the Rhaetians . The Fritzens-Sanzeno culture takes its name from him. In 2003 the Rhaetian Museum was opened in Sanzeno, dealing with Rhaetian culture.

In the year 397 AD the Christian martyrs Sisinius, Martyrius and Alexander from Cappadocia were killed in this area . The parish church is named after Sisinius . The place itself takes its name from the saint, as the dialect San Sesen (Saint Sisinius) became Sanzeno.

Strada statale 43 dir della Val di Non leads through Sanzeno . The access road to the pilgrimage site of San Romedio also turns in the center .
