San Romedio
The small monastery of San Romedio ( Sankt Romedius ) is located in a valley near Sanzeno ( Sanzinnen ) in the municipality of Predaia in Val di Non on a narrow rocky ridge away from human settlements. The place of pilgrimage owes its foundation to Saint Romedius , also known as "the saint with the bear" and is usually depicted riding a bear. The monastery has been inhabited by Franciscans since 1948.
San Romedio primarily attracts people from northern Italy, Tyrol, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The Cappella Maggiore in the monastery is dedicated to the saint, and his reliquary is located in the crypt.
There is a bear enclosure at the monastery. The bear Jurka, mother of the 2006 headline-making " problem bear Bruno " lived here. Since 2010 the female brown bear has been in the Alternative Wolf and Bear Park Black Forest, an animal protection project run by the Foundation for Bears.
