Villino Campi is an Art Nouveau villa built in the Belle Époque in the late 19th century in Riva del Garda in Trentino .

location

The villa is located east of the town center of Riva del Garda in a park just a few meters from the shores of Lake Garda . To the west it borders on the area of the Hartungen sanatorium built by Christoph von Hartungen , known today as the Miralago. The area in which the villa is located, which appeared under different names in the 19th century, was partly arable land and meadow, partly swampy terrain until the 16th century. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that building work began on this area.

history

The building was built around 1890. The first owner of the Art Nouveau villa, then called Villa Lola, was the Hungarian noblewoman Hermine Nadosij, born von Karczag , who was described as eccentric . In 1895, a small walled private harbor was built on the lakeshore belonging to the property, of which no traces have been preserved.

The villa changed hands for the first time in 1897 before it was acquired by Luigi de Campi , an archaeologist from Cles and a member of the Tyrolean Parliament and the House of Representatives of the Imperial Council in Vienna . The latter renamed the building Villino Campi.

In 1949 the Autonomous Province of Trento bought the villa, which in 1976 became the property of the Municipality of Riva del Garda. The latter made the building available to the province free of charge for twenty years in 1992, on condition that the province had it restored and set up a hydrobiological research facility in it.

In 1998 the Centro Villino Campi was inaugurated in the completely renovated villa. The institute operated by the Office for Environmental Protection of the Province of Trento, which was also open to visitors, dealt with environmental issues in the area of seascapes, with a focus on Lake Garda, as well as ecotourism .

The usage agreement between the municipality and the province expired in 2012. The latter waived a contract extension, whereupon the Centro Villino Campi was closed. In order to finance the maintenance of the villa, the municipality leased the ground floor facing the lake for private use.

description

The two-story Art Nouveau building resembles an Austrian representative building due to its facade in Schönbrunn yellow . It has the shape of a somewhat uneven horseshoe. The east wing of the villa, slightly offset from the central wing and one floor higher, contributes to this, which on the south side facing the lake stands out from the rest of the building due to the partly different facade colors and the coupled windows of the first floor. Access is via an outside staircase to an entrance area supported by two columns. On the north side, some pilasters and the Villino Campi lettering below the eaves of the east wing stand out from the otherwise uniform facade.
