Pelér

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pelèr is a north wind that blows regularly from June to September on Lake Garda , hence also called vento da nord . It arises on cold nights in the mountains, from where the cooled air flows into the Po Valley. It usually starts between midnight and 3 a.m. on the northern part of the lake; at sunrise it blows all the way to the south. Relatively large waves are characteristic of the Pelèr.

As soon as the sun warms the water on the west bank, the Pelèr usually increases in strength. The vento da nord blows for up to 12 hours; if it is reinforced by the north foehn, it sometimes lasts until 3 p.m. Usually, however, it blows to about 10 am with about 15 to 22 knots . Very strong Pelèr has a disturbing effect on the water, so that lower, colder layers come to the surface; In this case, the Lago di Garda is no longer warmed up sufficiently, which means that the òra or the south wind cannot arise.
