The Rifugio Stivo - "Prospero Marchetti" or just Rifugio Stivo or Rifugio Marchetti (German Stivohütte ) is a refuge of the Trentiner Alpenverein (SAT) on Monte Stivo in the Lake Garda mountains . The hut is open from the beginning of June to the end of September and from the end of December to the beginning of January and is also open on the other weekends of the year in good weather conditions. It has 23 beds and a winter room with 4 beds.

Location and surroundings

The Rifugio Stivo is located about 40 meters below the summit of Monte Stivo in the municipality of Arco in the province of Trento at 2012  m slm It was built on the partially steep western flank of the mountain, surrounded by meadows and pine fields, in a panoramic position. The view from the hut extends over a large part of the mountains of the southwestern half of the Trentino, from Monte Baldo and Lake Garda to the Adamello-Presanella Alps .

history

Rifugio Stivo with a view of the north shore of Lake Garda

As early as 1904, the SAT had made a plan to build a rifle hut on Monte Stivo. A year later, the construction rights were hastily secured, as they had heard that the Arco section of the DÖAV was also planning to build a hut on the Stivo and that no one wanted to experience a Tuckett case a second time .

In October 1906, the Arco section of the SAT was able to inaugurate the rifugio. It was named in honor of Prospero Marchetti . Marchetti, who came from Arco, founded the Trentino Alpine Association in Madonna di Campiglio in 1872 together with Nepomuceno Bolognini and was its first president. During the First World War the hut served the Austro-Hungarian army as accommodation. War buildings from this period have been preserved in their vicinity. The rifugio survived the war relatively unscathed, so that it was able to reopen as early as 1921. From 1924 to 1954 it was owned by the Rovereto SAT section before it was again taken over by the Arco section. The latter carried out extensive restoration work that had become necessary after the Second World War.

In the following period the Rifugio Stivo was modernized several times, at the end of the 1980s, in 2011 and most recently between 2016 and 2017. It is now owned by the SAT headquarters in Trento .
