The refuge is located on the eastern edge of the Lagorai chain in Parco Naturale Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino at the upper of the two Colbricon lakes at 1927  m asl. North-east of the refuge is Passo Rolle , which separates the Lagorai chain from the Pale group . To the southwest rises the Colbricon, which was heavily fought over in World War I , at 2604  m slm , under whose western summit, held by Austro-Hungarian troops , the Italian army detonated three mines in 1917 , which partially caused the summit to collapse. To the west of the hut, near the Passo di Colbricon, the remains of Italian barracks from the war period can still be seen. In the Mesolithic period, the Colbricon Pass was a frequented passage between the Primör in the south and the Fiemme Valley in the north, as evidenced by numerous finds that have been found near the Rifugio on the banks of the two Colbricon lakes since 1971. The rifugio, built in 1945, is located on the Translagorai long-distance hiking trail in the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza .
