Aníta Hinriksdóttir (born January 13, 1996 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic athlete who competes in the middle-distance run and specializes in the 800 meters.

Career

The Icelander was very successful at a very young age. In 2012, when she was only 16, she finished fourth at the Junior World Athletics Championships . The following year she won gold at the World Youth Championships and the European Junior Championships . In 2015 she finished 5th at the European Indoor Championships and was eliminated in the preliminary round of the 2015 World Championships in Beijing . She also won the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Sweden. At the 2016 World Indoor Championships , she again finished 5th in the final and was considered a favorite for a medal for the European Championships . She could not quite live up to expectations and took eighth place in the final with a time of 2: 02.55 min. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , despite a new national record time, she failed to make it to the semifinals.

At the European Indoor Championships 2017 in Belgrade , she secured her first medal at a major event in the senior class with third place over 800 meters and at the same time won the first Icelandic medal at the European Indoor Championships in nineteen years. At the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , she won the silver medal and only had to admit defeat to Belgian Renée Eykens .
