Renée Eykens (born June 8, 1996 in Brasschaat ) is a Belgian athlete who competes in the middle-distance run and specializes in the 800-meter run .

Career

At her first international championships, the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk , she finished sixth in 2: 07.70 minutes. Two years later she secured the gold medal at the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna in 2: 02.83 min and in 2016 she reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Amsterdam , where she was eliminated with 2: 02.38 min. With her performances she qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated in the semifinals with 2: 00.45 min . In the following year she won the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in 2: 04.73 minutes and prevailed against the favored Icelander Aníta Hinriksdóttir . In 2018 she took part again in the European Championships in Berlin , but was eliminated there with 2: 56.24 minutes in advance.

In 2019 she reached the finals at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow , where she finished fourth in 2: 03.32 minutes. In July she finished sixth in 2: 02.71 min at the Summer Universiade in Naples .

In 2017 she became Belgian indoor champion over 1500 meters. In 2016 she was awarded the Golden Spike, the highest award in the field of athletics in Belgium, as the greatest young hope.
