Amel Tuka (born January 9, 1991 in Kakanj , SR Bosnia and Herzegovina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian middle-distance runner who specializes in the 800-meter run . His greatest achievement is winning the silver medal at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha . He is the holder of the national records of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 400 and 800 meters .

Career

Tuka achieved his first international success by winning the bronze medal at the U23 European Championships in 2013 in Tampere (Finland). In the following year he finished sixth in the 800-meter run at the 2014 European Championships in Zurich, increasing the Bosnian record to 1: 46.12 min in the final.

After Amel Tuka was able to improve his national record several times in the 2015 season, on July 17, 2015 at the Herculis Sports Festival in Monaco he achieved a world best performance of 1: 42.51 min, with which he moved up to eleventh place in the all-time world best list which also meant the fourth best time ever achieved by a European runner. In the same year he took third place at the World Championships in Beijing behind the Olympic champion and world record holder David Lekuta Rudisha from Kenya and the European champion Adam Kszczot from Poland.

At the European Indoor Championships 2019 , Tuka reached sixth place over 800 m. At the 2019 World Athletics Championships , Tuka won the silver medal over the same distance.
