Paraskevi "Voula" Papachristou ( Greek Παρασκευή "Βούλα" Παπαχρήστου , * 17th April 1989 in Athens ) is a Greek triple jumper who for AEK Athens compete. Occasionally she also competes in the long jump .
Athletic career
Voula Papachristou gained her first international experience at the World Championships in Athletics in 2008 in Bydgoszcz , where she won the bronze medal with 13.74 m. The following year she reached the final at the European Indoor Championships in Turin , in which, however, she did not succeed in a valid attempt. At the beginning of July she won the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara with 14.12 m and then won the U23 European Championships in Kaunas with 14.34 m . So she qualified for the World Championships in Berlin , where she did not reach the final with 13.58 m. Also at the European Indoor Championships 2011 in Paris she was eliminated with 13.72 m in the qualification before she successfully defended her title at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava with 14.40 m. She again took part in the World Championships in Daegu , South Korea , but could not qualify for the final again with 14.05 m. The following year she was 11th with 13.89 m at the European Championships in Helsinki . Papachristou was a member of the Greek delegation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . However, because of an offensive comment on Twitter about African immigrants living in Greece , she was banned from the games by the Greek NOK two days before the opening ceremony . Papachristou is the first female athlete to be banned from the Olympic Games because of a Twitter comment.
In 2016, Papachristou won the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland with a width of 14.15 m behind the Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas and Kristin Gierisch from Germany. Also at the European Championships in Amsterdam she won the bronze medal with 14.46 m behind the Portuguese Patrícia Mamona and Hanna Knjasjewa-Minenko from Israel. This qualified her for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she finished eighth with 14.26 m in the final . In 2017 she won the bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade behind Gierisch and Mamona with a jump to 14.24 m . In August she again took part in the World Championships in London, where she was eliminated with 13.75 m in qualification . The following year she was sixth with 14.05 m at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham and won in August with 14.60 m at the European Championships in Berlin.
In 2019 she won the silver medal behind the Spaniard Ana Peleteiro at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow with a new best of 14.50 m in the final .
In 2009, 2011 and from 2015 to 2018 Papachristou became Greek champion in the triple jump outdoors and in 2008 and 2009, 2011 and 2016 and 2017 also in the hall. in the long jump, she secured the outdoor titles in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2018.
