Fionnuala McCormack (born Britton; born September 24, 1984 in Wicklow ) is an Irish long-distance and obstacle runner .

Life

At the Cross Country World Championships in 2004 in Brussels on the long distance and in 2005 in Saint-Galmier on the short distance, she finished 75th. In 2006 she retired from the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg over 3000 m obstacle in the preliminary run and won silver in the U23 race at the European Cross Country Championships in San Giorgio su Legnano .

In 2007 she came 14th at the Cross Country World Championships in Mombasa , was twelfth over 3000 m obstacle at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka and seventh at the Cross Country Championships in Toro . In the following year she ran at the Cross Country World Championships 2008 in Edinburgh in 36th place; at the Olympic Games in Beijing she did not get past the first lap over 3000 m obstacle.

In 2010 she was eleventh over 3000 m obstacle at the European Championships in Barcelona and fourth at the European Cross Country Championships in Albufeira . At the 2011 Cross Country World Championships in Punta Umbría, she finished 16th, and at the Great Ireland Run she was seventh overall national champion over 10 km. A run-out over 3000 m obstacle at the World Championships in Daegu was followed by the greatest success of her career to date: As the first Irish woman since Catherina McKiernan in 1994, she won the European Cross Country Championships in Velenje .

In 2012 she was fourth over 10,000 m at the European Championships in Helsinki . At the Olympic Games in London she came in 15th place over the same distance and was eliminated over 5000 m in the preliminary run. In December she was not only the first athlete to defend her title at the European Cross Country Championship in Szentendre , she also won gold in the team championship with the Irish team.

In 2013 she won bronze over 3000 m at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg , finished 14th at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz and came fourth at the European Cross Country Championships in Belgrade .

So far she has been Irish champion twice in cross-country running ( 2007, 2008) and over 3000 m obstacle (2008, 2009) and once in 10 km road running (2011). In 2013 she became national indoor champion over 1500 m .
