Dunshaughlin

Dunshaughlin ( Irish : Dún Seachlainn or locally Domhnach Seachnaill , meaning: Seachnaill's castle) is a place in County Meath in the Republic of Ireland . Dunshaughlin is approximately 30 km northwest of Dublin and its population grew steadily from 2,139 in 1996 to 3,063 in 2002 to 3,384 in the 2006 census.

history

Dún Seachlainn is the official Gaelic name according to the Irish Placenames Order of 1975 , while Domhnach Seachnaill is used locally by the locals. Both names are documented, Dún Seachlainn in secular and Domhnach Seachnaill in church writings. The place name refers to Saint Seachnaill, a contemporary of Saint Patrick who built a church here in the 5th century.

The oldest families in the area are the Muintir Uí Fhloinn and the Muintir Uí Mhuirí, both of which can trace their origins back to 1550.

Dunshaughlin is on the N3 national road and the R125 regional road. The city is connected to Dublin by the Bus Éireann bus service .
