Carlos Cardinal Oviedo Cavada OdeM (born January 19, 1927 in Santiago de Chile , † December 7, 1998 ibid) was Archbishop of Santiago de Chile .

Life

Carlos Oviedo Cavada joined the Order of the Mercedarians on January 28, 1944 , made simple vows on March 18, 1945, and made perpetual profession on March 19, 1948 . He studied at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile . He received on 4 September 1949 in his hometown of the priesthood and then went to Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he continued his studies from 1949 to 1953 and the Ph.D. Dr. iur. can. (Doctor of Canon Law ) received.

From 1953 to 1958 taught at his alma mater Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. From 1958 to 1961 he worked in the General Curia of his order and conducted studies in the Vatican Secret Archives .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 21, 1964 titular bishop of Beneventum and auxiliary bishop in Concepción . The old archbishop of Concepción, Alfredo Silva Santiago donated him episcopal ordination on June 7th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Manuel Sánchez Beguiristáin , Archbishop of Concepción, and Emilio Tagle Covarrubias , Archbishop of Valparaíso . He attended the Second Vatican Council from 1964 until the end in 1965 . From 1970 to 1974 Carlos Oviedo also served as secretary of the Chilean Bishops' Conference. He was made Archbishop of Antofagasta on March 25, 1974 and Apostolic Administrator of Calama on May 4, 1974 . Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Santiago de Chile on March 30, 1990 .

On 26 November 1994 he took John Paul II. As cardinal priest with the pro hac vice to title Church gathered Title Diakonie Santa Maria della Scala in the College of Cardinals on. He resigned on February 16, 1998 as Archbishop of Santiago de Chile for health reasons. Auxiliary Bishop Sergio Valech Aldunate took over the leadership of the Archdiocese as Apostolic Administrator until Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa took office on May 17, 1998.

Cardinal Oviedo Cavada died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in December 1998 in the hospital of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and was buried in the Cathedral of Santiago.
