The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile ( lat. : Archidioecesis Sancti Jacobi in Chile , span. : Arquidiócesis de Santiago de Chile ) is an in Chile located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Santiago de Chile .

history

The diocese of Santiago de Chile was established on June 27, 1561 by Pope Pius IV from cessions of territory from the Archdiocese of Lima and the Diocese of La Plata o Charcas . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lima as a suffragan .

On May 21, 1840, the Diocese of Santiago de Chile by Pope Gregory XVI. raised to the archbishopric. It also became the seat of a metropolitan . The archbishopric gave up several times in its history parts of its territory to establish new dioceses.

The Archbishop of Santiago de Chile is also the Primate of Chile . Since 1946, all archbishops of Santiago de Chile have been created cardinals , so that Santiago de Chile is traditionally a bishopric with a cardinal dignity.

On July 12, 2018, the former abuse officer and chancellor of the Archdiocese, Óscar Muñoz Toledo , was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing seven people between the ages of 11 and 17 between 2002 and 2018 .
