The Archdiocese of Antofagasta ( lat. : Archidioecesis Antofagastensis , span. : Arquidiócesis de Antofagasta ) is one in Chile located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Antofagasta .

history

The Archdiocese of Antofagasta was founded in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII. established as Mission sui juris Antofagasta . In 1887 the Mission sui juris Antofagasta was promoted to the Apostolic Vicariate . On February 3, 1928, Pope Pius XI. the Apostolic Vicariate of Antofagasta to the diocese. It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of La Serena as a suffragan . The diocese of Antofagasta gave up on July 21, 1965 parts of its territory to establish the territorial prelature of Calama .

On June 28, 1967, the diocese of Antofagasta was by Pope Paul VI. raised to the archbishopric.
